This city is unique because of its wonderful ancient ruin, beautiful cultural events and festivals. There are many museums, galleries and wonderful ancient treasures locate within Greece. Anyone with any cultural or historical interest will find much of interest in Athens Greece.
What are some of the wonderful sights in Athens?
You have surely heard of the most important of the Athens attractions, that of the Acropolis, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site. This attraction dates back to the Bronze age, and was actuall an ancient fortification called Athens. It is here that you will be able to see some of the most famous buildings and samples of the ancient Greek classical age, including the Parthenon and the wondrous temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion building.
Other Wondrous Places in Athens to Visit
One other attraction you wont want to miss is that of Ancient Agora, or the Syntagma Square. This is the area where the Temple of Hphaestus lies, which is still the best preserved of all ancient Greek temples. You may also want to see the Attalos Stoa, or the museum of Agora. Other interesting attractions in Athens are Kerameikos, an ancient cemetery of Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Panathinaiko Stadium, which is the first modern stadium to host the Olympic Games back in 1896.
Athens is an enjoyable city to walk in and there are many museums you will want to make day trips to. You will want to see the New Acropolis museum, which is newly constructed, and of course the Kanellopoulos and the Folk Art Museums of Plaka. There is also the National Archaeological museum close to Omonia and the Cycladic Art museums in Kolonaki. All of these house wonderful ancient treasures.
Other great attractions in Athens are the many festivals and events that occur often. Most of these take place in the summer. For instance the Epidaurus festival often brings many experts in ancient theatre arts. Then there is the Athens International Film Festival which has been taking place since the early 1970’s.
